Beth Fortwendel is a badass. She would tell you otherwise, I know.  She would say she's often too tired to talk, too sad to laugh, too annoyed to do much of anything.

But trust me, she's a badass.

Beth has Scleroderma, a rare auto-immune disease that basically boils down to the fact that there's no cure and she can't really breathe.  Her lungs function minimally, rendering her easily fatigued, with muscles burning from brushing her hair and an oxygen tank constantly hissing into her nose.  She's 34.  She's also my closest friend in the world and has been for a long time.

We live three hours apart, but we communicate a lot. I'm always up to date on her stuff, and she's up to date on me. I say this because I recently ran my first half-marathon this year, and in preparation for writing this little essay, I went back and looked at texts from her.

March 24: "Congrats on the run, babe!"

April 14: "You be runnin' 10 miles w/o stopping? That's amazing and something I could never do!"

May 5: "I'm sooooo proud of you today!  You're so awesome!"

So yeah, she's one of my biggest cheerleaders.  And I'm one of hers.  So here's what happened in July:

July 5, 1:37AM (she's up late all the time, given anxiety and meds and a mess of other things): "You know hwo people do runs/races pushing their kid in strollers? We could do one together with you pushing me in a wheelchair.  I'd even wear runner clothes and shoes so I can pretend.  Maybe Emily would do it with us and push part-time. :) "

Me: I could totally run and push you. We could raise money for Scleroderma. If we wanna get really ambitious, some of us could do the half-marathon here on November 2."

So.  Let's do this.

On November 2, 2013, Beth Fortwendel and friends will be participating in the Indianapolis Monumental Half-Marathon to raise awareness and money for the Scleroderma Foundation. All contributions are for the Scleroderma Foundation to use to help find a cure for those whose lives have been affected by Scleroderma.

Donate here!  Or, if you're up for it, walk with us on November 2nd.  You have to register here:  We would LOVE to have you on our team.  It's a beautiful course through downtown Indianapolis. Registration rates go up on October 4th.  Remember, registering to do the half-marathon does not give money to this foundation.  That's separate.  So there are three options:

1) Walk in the half (that's 13.1 miles with a group of pals--we'll make it so fun) and be part of the team "Is This Wheel Life?"

2) Donate money to our cause.  We're raising awareness for Scleroderma. (If you would like to find out more about scleroderma and the Foundation, please visit

3) Do BOTH.

We would love your support in any form.  If you have any questions, you can contact me.  I'm spearheading this event and effort. or 317-308-0771.

Yay!  To friendship!
