Thank you for visiting my Team Fundraising page to support the "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma" event in memory of my mother, Lori Groves-White!

Scleroderma is a group of rare diseases that involve the hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues — the fibers that provide the framework and support for your body. In some people, scleroderma affects only the skin, but in many people, scleroderma also harms structures beyond the skin — such as blood vessels, internal organs and the digestive tract. Scleroderma affects women more often than men and most commonly occurs between the ages of 30 and 50. While there is no cure for scleroderma, a variety of treatments can ease symptoms and improve quality of life.

My mother was diagnosed with Scleroderma around the year 2000 and valiantly and courageously fought this disease for over 15 years with grace, class, and her personal flair. Through the grace of God and the love and support from her family, friends, colleagues, church family, and her beloved sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she was determined to fight this illness and to live her best life. While living with Scleroderma, she was a devoted wife and mother, supported her children through college, completed all requirements except for the dissertation for a Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University, and was involved in a myriad of faith-based and civic organizations, primarily to aid in the fight for equality and equity for women and people of color.

I am participating in this year's walk, not only to honor the life and legacy of my mother, but also to bring awareness of how Scleroderma disproportionately affects African-Americans, as compared to Whites. We are out to find a cure!

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to support my team’s effort to raise funds for people living with scleroderma. To make a donation, click on one of the team members to make a gift towards their fundraising effort to help our team.

If you would like to join our team at the event, and walk and help raise funds, please click on “Join My Team” and follow the directions. Also, please let me know personally, as I will be coordinating some special activities for those that participate.

Please help our team bring more awareness to Scleroderma so we can find a cure! Our team sincerely appreciates your support, and we ask you to please share this with anyone who you think might want to help.

All the best,

Daniel
