John & Ilene's Hope Raisers

Spring of 2017

To All:

Well this has been a tough year. To the people who don’t know; Ilene passed this past January 10th, 2017. Long story short Ilene caught pneumonia in late November. She was hospitalized in December for 2 weeks. During those (2) two weeks it was discovered she had lung cancer. Ilene was released for home and spent the Christmas and New Year’s break at home. During those 2 weeks we found out she had Stage 4 lung cancer. On January 6th Ilene suffered a second stoke. She had surgery and during recovery she suffered a 3rd and 4th stroke and never regained consciousness. She passed peacefully. Please keep her in her prayers.

In her honor Ilene and I will continue the fundraiser for this year. I hope to raise $5,000 in Ilene’s honor. It is, time for the Annual Scleroderma Walk/Run on June 4, 2017–Stampede Scleroderma. This year will mark our 38th walk/run and the 14th year the family has participated. Together with your help we (ilene and myself) have raised over $30,000.00 to help fight Scleroderma. We still have no cure or cause for this disease. . We continue to need your help to fight this battle!!!

The Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter has been serving its members and patients for 38 years. We are still growing within the State of Michigan. We continue our efforts of awareness in the medical community, patients and the public about Scleroderma. We now have 3 Patient Education seminars in Michigan. Our patients can also participate in a virtual support group and never have to leave home, which is hard for a lot of patients. Every year we are able to increase the money for research. With your help we can continue to serve the patients affected by Scleroderma.

Quick refresher course on What is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma is a chronic, often progressive autoimmune disease-like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis-in which the body’s immune systems attacks its own tissues. The disease, which literally means “hard skin” can cause thickening and tightening of skin, as well as serious damage to internal organs, including the lungs, heart, kidneys, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract. For some individuals, Scleroderma is a nuisance. For others, it is a life-threatening disease. For most people with Scleroderma, the disease has serious impact on daily life. And, although medications can sometimes help, there is no cure yet.

Please help me by donating, walking or running. This is the only solicitation I do each year. The walk is being held again at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, MI on Sunday June 4, 2017. Checks should be made out to the Scleroderma Foundation and sent to me by June 1, 2017. Enclosed is a SASE or if you misplace it please send to:

Address: Michalski, 48084 Tilch, Macomb MI. 48044

or the website

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for any help you can give. If you know of anyone else who would be interested in donating, running, walking or volunteering please forward this to them. If you have any questions please feel free to call or write me.
