Save the Date!

Mark your calendars for South Carolina Chapter’s annual Amy K Parrish Patient Education Conference.

When: February 3, 2018

Where: MUSC, Charleston, South Carolina

Don’t miss our keynote speaker, Dr. Janet Poole, a professor and director of the Occupational Therapy Graduate Program at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Dr. Poole was the keynote speaker at the first South Carolina Chapter Patient Education Conference held in 2011, and she returns this year to give a talk on her recent research study involving a self-management program for systemic sclerosis patients, as well as a presentation on practical exercises to improve mobility and function in your hands and face.

Dr. Poole holds a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Colorado State University, her masters in educational psychology from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and her PhD in motor learning/motor control from the University of Pittsburgh.

She became very involved with scleroderma patients in 1984 as an occupational therapist after she began working with two scleroderma specialists at the University of Pittsburgh. Since then, she continued to study the functional impact of the disease on the tasks of daily living and hand mobility in scleroderma patients.  She has developed occupational therapy and self-management interventions to address the needs of people with scleroderma.

Dr. Poole has won several awards for her work including the David J. Jackson Distinguished Research Award in Disability and Health from the New Mexico Department of Health and Center for Development and Disability in 2001, the National Volunteer of the Year Award from the Scleroderma Foundation in 2011, and the Master Clinician Award in 2012 and the Distinguished Educator Award in 2014, both from the Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals.

Check back with us soon as we will have more information to post about the conference including a link to register online.
