Bobby Hamilton, Jr. Finishes a Remarkable Third at Talladega
Bobby Hamilton, Jr., who started the Aaron’s 312 in 36th position, avoided Talladega’s inevitable "big one" and registered a stellar third place finish. Bobby also moves into the top-ten in Nationwide Series driver points.
“It gives momentum on everything,” Bobby said. “To walk away with a top-five finish, it just steamrolls. And then you go to Richmond and if you can do decent there, then all of a sudden you’re just passing cars left and right, you’re doing everything—that’s how momentum gets started. I guarantee you my guys have a different pep in their step when they go to Richmond, and then all of a sudden that bleeds off to your race car. It just builds your race team. It makes everybody more confident, and when they’re confident, they’re hard to beat.”
Tony Stewart was leading Dale Earnhardt, Jr. through Turn 1 on Lap 71 when Kevin Lepage pulled onto the track from the pit road into the front of the field and triggered a chain-reaction pileup that collected 14 cars, including the contending vehicles of Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski, David Reutimann, Steve Wallace, Reed Sorenson, and Kyle Busch. Casualties of the wreck included six of the top 10 in the Nationwide Series standings entering the race. Edwards, who could not get out of the way when Lepage entered the racing surface in front of him, was understandably frustrated. "This restrictor-plate racing, it's a great spectacle, but somebody could get killed," said Edwards, who escaped injury in the crash.
Bobby and the Team Rensi Motorsports/Smithfield #25 Ford Taurus now move on to the Richmond International Raceway for the Nationwide 250. Be sure to watch Bobby’s run on ESPN, Friday evening, May 2 at 7 p.m.
