Move Over, Tigger; James Roumeliotis
Bounces Into Record Books

Worcester Polytechnic Institute senior James Roumeliotis
has bounced his way into the record books, or so it
is believed. The 21-year-old college student from Lynnfield,
Mass. last weekend reportedly broke the Guinness Book
of World Records mark for most pogo stick jumps in a
24-hour period. The reason we are hedging is because
the number of jumps needs to be confirmed by an independent
judge. It is hoped the confirmation will be made available
very shortly.
Roumeliotis guesses that he jumped between 190,000–210,000
times over a 20-hour period. The old record was 177,000.
A fraternity brother of Sigma Pi, he was jumping on
behalf of his one of his fraternity brothers, Erik Magnuson,
whose mother has scleroderma.
The event was held to raise both awareness and money
for the New England Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation,
and he succeeded on both fronts. His story was published
in two daily newspapers, and a weekly newspaper. He
was interviewed by three radio stations and by a local
television station in Boston, with the story picked
up in an additional 55 television markets across the
country. Next Thursday, he will be interviewed live
on the morning news on Fox 25 in Boston while jumping
during the entire broadcast.
Roumeliotis has also raised in excess of $4,200, and
hopes for more donations as well. They can be made to
his Web site, www.bouncetoacure.com.
Congratulations.
