Foundation to Benefit from Florida
Golf Tournament
If you are in Florida in mid-December, and a fan of
some of golf’s legends, you may want to take in
the 2007 Handa Cup, Dec. 15 and 16 in St. Augustine,
home of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
The Scleroderma Foundation will be one of two non-profit
organizations to benefit from the star-studded tournament.
The reason: Bobbi Salmon.
Salmon, a professional golfer who has scleroderma,
was the prime motivating force behind the 100 by $1,000
concept that generated over $70,000, a third of which
went to the Foundation. Now the Legends Tour—consisting
of professional women golfers 45 and over—has
decided to give back to one of their own.
“Scleroderma is a disease that doesn’t
get enough recognition,” said Legends Tour President
Jane Blalock. “It was particularly important that
we support her (Salmon) since one of our Legends suffers
from scleroderma and dedicates her time and resources
to awareness and research of this disease.”
The tournament will pit a team of U.S. born LPGA legends
against a team of world professionals in a two-day international
match play competition. The U.S. squad will be captained
by Kathy Whitworth, and include Hall of Famers Pat Bradley,
JoAnne Carner, Sandra Haynie, Amy Alcott, and Patty
Sheehan.
The world team features Jan Stephenson, a three-time
LPGA major winner, 15-time LPGA winner Sally Little
and Canadian Hall of Famer Dawn Coe Jones.
The event will be held at the Squire and Slammer golf
courses. The World Golf Village also is home to the
Golf Hall of Fame.
“This is a wonderful facility, and a real good
golf course,” said Salmon, who has played there.
“For anybody who likes golf, this is quite a special
place.”
