A Friend Indeed

Updated August 31, 2007

Angelo DiVincenzo and Alyson

Angelo DiVincenzo and Alyson met in high school, graduated together from Shelton High (Ct.) in 1991 and have remained best friends since. Though they have moved around the country, their friendship bond has remained rock solid.

When Angelo turned 30 four years ago, he challenged himself to complete his first endurance event, a 600-mile bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to benefit those with AIDS. Soon, competing in events for charity provided him with an outlet to not only maintain an excellent level of fitness, but also to help people in need. Among those he has raised money for is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through their triathlons.

Two years ago, a rare disease known as scleroderma hit very close to Angelo’s core. In 2005, after about six months of tests, and seeing specialists, Alyson was diagnosed with systemic sclerosis.

“This disease has been difficult on Alyson,” said Angelo, who lives in Miami and when not training works in real estate. “But we are all learning as much as possible about scleroderma, trying to keep positive.

“I am dedicated to spreading awareness and raising money for scleroderma research in honor of Alyson. Just knowing that all the funds go directly to the Foundation for people in need keeps me focused on my training.”

Angelo has decided to do something he does best. Compete. He will be participating in a 140-mile endurance event, the Janus Charity Challenge, Nov. 3 in Panama City, Fla. The race consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and to top it off a 26.2-mile marathon.

His goal is to raise $10,000. If he finishes in the top five of the race, then Janus will donate additional money to the charity. In the first five days since announcing his intentions, Angelo has already raised more than $8,000.

His hope is by getting the word out about his endeavors, he can raise the additional funds and awareness to meet his goal and help the Foundation and Alyson. If you want more information on Angelo, click the link
