ACR Meeting Productive for Foundation
Scleroderma Foundation Chief Executive Officer Frannie
Waldron and Information and Referral Coordinator Jaye
Van Dussen attended the American College of Rheumatology
meeting this week in Washington, D.C. The event, which
is the premiere meeting for rheumatologists and arthritis
health professionals from around the world, broke all
previous attendance records. Many doctors, pharmaceutical
companies, non-profit organizations and other interested
parties stopped by the Foundation’s booth to talk,
collect information and discuss collaborative concepts
to help patients living with scleroderma.

The meeting provided doctors opportunities
to learn the latest in research studies pertaining to
scleroderma and related autoimmune diseases.
“Of particular significance was the range of
studies presented, from very basic molecular biology
to clinical trials and innovative therapies,”
said John Varga, M.D., chairman of the Foundation’s
Medical Advisory Board. “Also remarkable was the
unprecedented international scope of collaborations,
with outstanding studies from investigators in Japan,
Italy, the United Kingdom, as well as the U.S. Large
networks of collaborative researchers working together
are emerging. All of this bodes very well for the future
of scleroderma research. We may finally be on the threshold
of significant therapeutic breakthroughs for the treatment
of this disease.”
Next year’s meeting will be held in Boston. |
