“I saw this face of a homeless Marine, leaning against a lamppost, dimly light. It was night, and it was very dark, sultry, or cold. The sky was real clear, with the stars shining brightly. He had a burlap bag pulled up against his side that was red, white and blue, symbolic of the U.S.A. His dog was next to him. Below him was a trash can, with the lid tilted and there were cigarettes lit around a fire, with soldiers there. Only the lieutenant’s face I could see. And the brightest star was shining on his face, a star on a star. He had a face of courage, peace, bravery – everything good. There was nothing about self-pity. Below it is a caption – They gave us everything they had; now it’s our turn with a contact number.”
