Volunteers from the Scleroderma Foundation New England Chapter

On Wednesday, June 16, volunteers from the Scleroderma Foundation New England Chapter were here at the national office helping us get prepared for the National Conference. Volunteers stuck stickers, collated and folded papers, stuffed envelopes, and laughed a lot. Pizza from a local pizzaria was welcomed and eaten by eveyone. Also in attendance were Chapter President Marie Coyle and Treasurer Walter Coyle.

Questions About Attire for Conference

Attire for the National Conference varies depending upon the event taking place. We offer the following dress code as a guide to help you pack accordingly for each day of the trip:

Friday (Day): Casual
Friday (Evening): Casual/Business
Saturday and Sunday (Day): Casual
Saturday (Evening): Cocktail/Formal

We realize that many people with scleroderma have sensitivity to air conditioned rooms. We work with the hotel to keep meeting rooms warmer than usual, but it is important to know that not every public space in the hotel can be modulated, and comfort levels vary from individual to individual. It is always wise to carry a sweater, light jacket or wrap that you can easily put on or remove as necessary.

NIAMS Scientists Find Potential New Way to Block Inflammation in Autoimmune Disease

Researchers from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have identified a promising new target for autoimmune disease treatment — a cell-surface receptor called DR3. Their research in mice, published on line in the journal Immunity, suggests that blocking this receptor could slow or stop the damaging inflammation characteristic of autoimmune diseases, potentially without leaving the body vulnerable to serious infections, as many current therapies do.

Studies from University of Pittsburgh in the Area of Pulmonary Fibrosis Published

Therapeutics Daily

(NewsRx.com) -- According to recent research published in the American Journal of Pathology, "Systemic sclerosis (SSc)-related pulmonary fibrosis, for which there are few effective therapies, is the most common cause of SSc-related mortality (see also Pulmonary Fibrosis). We examined insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II expression in explanted lung tissues from control and SSc patients to determine its role in the pathogenesis of fibrosis."

The Nationwide Series Moves to Madison, Illinois

This week, the Nationwide Series heads to Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois for Saturday night racing action and there might be some hope for the non-Toyota teams as NASCAR confiscated ten engines (3 Toyotas) following last week’s race. As we reported, the Toyota horsepower once again dominated the action last week at the Chicagoland Speedway as Kyle Busch ran away with the victory. NASCAR is trying to determine if there is competitive balance with Toyota, Ford, Chevy and Dodge engines and if not, what adjustments have to be made in order to level the playing field.

"It's tough out here, Bobby Hamilton Jr. said. “We can get our car handling for periods in the race, but the Toyotas drive right on by everyone. Nevertheless, my guys are working hard and we are still excited about the next few weeks of racing."

Be sure to watch Bobby and the entire team as they compete in the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealer 250 Saturday evening, July 19th on ESPN2 at 9:00 p.m., EST. Check your local listings for the time in your area. Also check out last week’s photo of Rensi Motorsports’ guests representing Eckrich, one of the #25 car’s primary sponsors, who are wearing shirts that include the Scleroderma logo.
