National Volunteer Week,
April 27–May 3
This special week gives the Scleroderma Foundation an important opportunity to thank our most valuable assets—our volunteers—and to recognize the myriad of ways in which they assist the Scleroderma Foundation with its mission of Support, Education, and Research.
National Volunteer Week reflects the power that volunteers have to “inspire by example.” Not only are volunteers able to enrich the lives of those they offer to help, but they are also able to demonstrate the rewards that can be had through the collaborative efforts of everyday men, women, and children.
Our devoted volunteers are an indispensable network of servicemen and women who come from both inside and outside the organization- yet all do their part to make the Scleroderma Foundation successful in its many endeavors. We honor our compassionate volunteers who have and will continue to donate their time and efforts to the Scleroderma Foundation. Your dedication is greatly appreciated!

We invite you to participate in a process designed to identify major, cross-cutting challenges to health research and to articulate solutions to these challenges. The NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, funded via the NIH Common Fund, is a series of programs that collectively seek to transform the way health research is conducted so that treatment, diagnosis, prevention, and/or understanding of human disease may be accelerated. Roadmap programs are intended to be stimulatory and are therefore supported by the Common Fund for a maximum of 10 years. These programs accept a high degree of risk to approach complex problems in new ways, to develop transformative tools and technologies, and/or to address fundamental knowledge gaps that impede progress in many disease areas. Each Roadmap program cuts across the missions of NIH Institutes and Centers as well across diseases and is expected to accelerate research on many diseases and conditions. |

According
to Dr. Nathan Wei, "The hand and wrist are the mirrors
of disease." While the cause of hand pain can be a localized
problem, hand pain can also be the presenting sign for other
diseases.

Newswise
— When a family member is dying, how can their loved
ones provide the care and comfort needed?
Increasingly,
Americans are turning to hospice for help. Hospice is a term
that describes programs involving a team of individuals who
work together to provide optimal supportive care for terminally
ill individuals and their families. It begins when curative
treatment has stopped and death is anticipated within six
months. |

Want
to exercise, but just can’t seem to get moving? When
it comes to health and fitness, your state of mind, or emotional
conditioning, is as important as your physical conditioning.
Yet aside from pro athletes, few people focus on the mental
aspects of physical fitness, whether it’s overcoming
injury-related anxiety or simply getting motivated to lace
up your sneakers each day. Changing your mindset can help
you live a more active life. |
