*ACTION ALERT* *ACTION ALERT *

Funding for the National Institutes of Health

This week the Senate passed their fiscal year (FY) 2008 Labor-Health and Human Services (HHS)-Education Appropriations bill by a vote of 75 to 19. This bill includes a much needed $1 billion funding increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

On July 19th of this year the House of Representatives passed their FY 2008 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill. However, the House-passed bill only provides NIH with a funding increase of $750 million.

The members of the Senate and House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittees will now negotiate a compromised bill which will be sent to the President for final approval. To ensure that the final FY 2008 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill includes the higher Senate-passed funding level for NIH an Action Alert has been drafted.
