Keeping Hands Flexible

You simply must fight scleroderma’s impact on your hands. From my own non-expert experience, the only alternative is a slow, inexorable progression to what I saw at a scleroderma meeting: a lovely lady who had both hands frozen into clenched fists, still feeling pressure. Fortunately, she had a kind husband who did everything she couldn’t.

Jean (Racine) Prahm Named to the United States Olympic Team

Foundation spokesperson is partnered with Vonetta Flowers; selected to drive USA Bobsledding’s #2 sled at the 2006 Winter Olympics, to be held in Turin, Italy February 10–26. For Jean, this will be her second trip to the Olympics.

FDA Approvals: Total TMJ Replacement System for Diseased/Damaged Jaw Joints

On Sept. 21, 2005, the FDA approved a prosthetic device (Total Temporomandibular Joint [TMJ] Replacement System, made by Walter Lorenz Surgical, Inc.) for the functional reconstruction of diseased and/or damaged jaw joints. Its two components (mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa) are available in multiple sizes as right- and left-side specific designs and are attached to bone by screws.

The noted metal band Twisted Sister has donated an autographed guitar to the Foundation’s Delaware Valley Chapter to commemorate Lori Spinelli, a fan who lost her battle with scleroderma in June 2004. Bids are being taken on eBay now! All proceeds go to the Delaware Valley Chapter.
