A Great Big Huge Thank You to Our Star Speakers at the last Support Group meeting held on April 11

CheerleaderDr. Mark Wener – U.W. Medical Center Rheumatology; Director of the Clinical lab at the UWMC since 2005. He is the current Rheumatologist for the Scleroderma studies with Fred Hutch & U.W.

It was a joy to have such a wonderful speaker who talked to us about general scleroderma stuff, plus his research and his hope to put together a Scleroderma Clinic. He also spent time with patients afterwards to answer personal questions, which earns him extra brownie points in my book!

Gloria Blanco-Duque – Clinical Pharmacist with Accredo. Gloria is a great friend to our chapter and is usually at support group meetings just as a helper. This Saturday we conned her into speaking about her knowledge on P.A.H. and how it pertains to Scleroderma patients. What are we suppose to watch for? What medications are out there for this illness? What do we tell our doctors who don’t seem to take our breathing issues seriously? These were a few of the questions that she answered. Gloria is a great speaker and like Dr. Wener answered personal questions afterwards, which earns her even more brownie points than she already had!

We also were once again spoiled with boxed lunches from Gretchen’s. This was a great support group meeting that we hope to duplicate in the future!

Please feel free to e-mail me any ideas of topics or discussions we should be offering at our Support Group! Also if you know a doctor or anyone else you feel would be a great speaker for our group, please let us know!  Kris@garthefamily.com

Thanks again to those of you who made it to the support meeting and to our A+ speakers!

Seattle Support Group Holiday Party

On Saturday, December 13th our support group had our annual Holiday Party.  Due to weather along with other factors the attendance was small, but the fun was huge!  We still played the infamous present game with a Voodoo doll and a few other gifts being the coveted items this year.  Thanks to everyone who came and brought something yummy to eat, while we played and laughed the afternoon away! For those of you who couldn’t make it this time we missed you. This next year for the Seattle support group we are gearing up for some different topics to discuss along with some of the old.  If you have any ideas of activities, speakers, just a topic you would like to learn more about, let us know. Hope each of you are surviving this snowy and cold winter!

"Nothing Is Impossible" Golf Tournament Raises $30,000 Toward Bobbi Salmon Project

Bobbi Salmon, a 24-year veteran of women's professional golf and a scleroderma survivor, was on hand at The Links Golf Club in Post Falls, Idaho to kick off a fundraiser on July 27. One hundred participants enjoyed the outstanding weather for a shotgun start tournament and chicken barbeque. Several donated items including golf clubs and jewelry were raffled as well. The Links golf professional, Patti Marquis, a personal friend of Bobbi Salmon, spent countless hours organizing the benefit with the assistance of her staff. The $30,000 raised will benefit scleroderma research and an LPGA fund to support players with disabling or terminal illnesses.

Debbie Liddell and Roberta Choma, Spokane Support Group co-leaders, represented the Scleroderma Foundation in providing educational materials and answering questions for players and spectators. Because the event was so successful, golf pro Patti Marquis plans to host another event in 2008.

Two Chapter Members Honored at 2007 National Conference

The Evergreen Chapter has the great fortune to be comprised of a team of passionate and dedicated members. As our chapter celebrates its 15th year, we are so very honored to have two of this year’s national award recipient's on our team.

Chapter Volunteer of the Year – Bunny Garthe, President of the Evergreen Chapter, was involved in organizing the first "Stepping Out" walk, and is a great support for people who have no hope.

Messenger of Hope – Kris Garthe, Bunny’s daughter, is a support group leader and was the driving force for the first walk. Very willing to share her story, Kris survived a stem cell transplantation procedure seven years ago. Her ever-present smile lights up a room.

Kris and Bunny have inspired our chapter for many years with their unwavering strength, commitment, sacrifice, and dedication.

Congratulations to both Kris and Bunny for your well deserved awards presented at this year's National Conference in Philadelphia! Their leadership and inspiration has been vital in the growth, development, and success of the Evergreen chapter.

Senator Pat Murray at one of her weekly coffee sessions.

Senator Pat Murray Hosts Weekly Coffee for Washington State Constituents. Every Wednesday morning when the Senate is in session, Senator Murray hosts a weekly coffee for Washington state constituents. This is an opportunity for Washington state residents who are visiting our nation's capitol to meet Senator Murray and chat briefly with her. Families are welcome to bring their children to the coffee. The coffee runs from 8:30–9:00 a.m. in the Senator's Washington, D.C. office: Room 173 of the Russell Senate Office Building. A photographer is available to take your picture with the Senator. Please arrive at 8:20 a.m. (We often move to another room to better accommodate a large turnout).

NOTE: If you signed up for their coffee by using the webform that was previously on Senator Murray's home page, they did not receive your RSVP. Please telephone their office at 202-224-2621. Thank you. More.
