6th Annual "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma" Walk
June 14, 2008 was an extremely fun time for all who came out to our 6th annual "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma" Walk in Nashville. We had 287 people who joined us by the train in Centennial Park, despite the sporadic rain showers, to help us fund research for a Scleroderma cure. Around 25 volunteers worked hard to make this year a success: from all the preparatory phone calls and business visits, to having to get wet setting up signs and balloons; they should be highly commended. At least the rain cooled off the temperature, and it stopped long enough for everyone to get about three laps around the beautiful park; then we all gathered in the large picnic shelter, and the rain was no bother to anyone. We so appreciated our 11 teams who walked in honor, or in memory of their loved one affected by Scleroderma. "Charlie's Angels," in honor of Charles Cowell, raised the most money with $3,400 and the "Team Shirley," in memory of Shirley Biggers had the most walkers with 24. Honorable mentions go to the "Sugarfoots," in memory of Jan Abercrombie, Zula’s Tribe, in memory of Zula Kuertz, "Sclera-Carey," in honor of Marlette Carey, "Team Simpkins," in honor of April Simpkins, loved ones of Martha Sutton and William Lofty, and many others who were there to support others. We always look forward to catching up with all of our friends, as well as hoping to meet some new individuals and teams who inspire us all. If you have never walked with us, especially if you are a friend or family member of someone who has Scleroderma, come walk with us next year on the 2nd Saturday of June (June 13, 2009.)
Rhori Johnston, the evening news anchor for Channel 5 (local CBS affiliate) once again did a wonderful job as our guest MC (and cheerleader for the walkers.) The local Southern Bluegrass band “Upstairs Monday” was excellent entertainment as the rain started, and everyone piled their plates with hot dogs and goodies grilled by Richard Murray's Chuck Wagon. There was a fun balloon show for the children who were thrilled with their animal balloons; they also enjoyed the face painting for the young and the young at heart. We gathered all kinds of goodies for our famous door prizes; around 50 gift certificates were given away to restaurants and businesses. Every walker went away with a T-shirt, a full belly, and a happy heart that they supported so many of us who are affected by Scleroderma.
We made $16,232 this year, which was wonderful, but not quite close to our $19,300 of last year. If you would like to give to our 2008 Walk, it is not too late, just mail your check to TN Scleroderma Chapter, PO Box 2844, Hendersonville, TN 37077, and be sure to write Walk in the memo line. Thank you so much, and see you next year!
