Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Scleroderma
by: Karen Kuligowski, R.N., Accredo Therapeutics,
Co.
Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) is
abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries that take
blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs. When
the pressure inside the pulmonary artery is high, the right
side of the heart has to pump harder to move the blood into
the lungs to pick up oxygen. This can lead to failure of
the right side of the heart.
