5th Annual North Shore Walk-A-Thon To Cure
Scleroderma
Sunday, September 13
The Fifth Annual North Shore Walk-A-Thon To Cure Scleroderma will take place in the town of
Topsfield, Mass., on Sunday, September 13. Sign-in will begin in the Proctor School Gym, 60 Main Street, starting at 10 a.m., where pledges
will be turned in and T-shirts handed out.
The Walk steps off at 12 noon, rain or shine. The 5K route will take walkers down Main Street
toward the Topsfield Fair Grounds, then turn onto country roads along the Ipswich River and back
to the Proctor School for refreshments, entertainment, silent auctions and raffles. In addition to
this Highlander Course, there will be a level course – The Flatlander – of equal distance set up
behind the school.
Prizes will be given to: the first person to finish each course; the youngest walker to finish; and
the senior walker to finish.
This year’s walk is being dedicated to the memory of the late Walter Coyle, a Topsfield resident
who passed away earlier this year. For more than 30 years, Walter volunteered his services
fulltime to ensure that every action humanly possible was taken to help people with scleroderma
and their families. His volunteer roles ranged from being the CEO of the national Scleroderma
Foundation, to being the Treasurer of the Foundation’s New England Chapter, to handling
registration for this North Shore Walk.
Walkers are requested that completed registration forms be returned to the Scleroderma
Foundation New England (SFNE) Chapter Office (462 Boston Street, Suite 1-1, Topsfield, Mass.) before September 4 to ease the sign-in process on Walk Day. Registration forms and
pledge sheets can be printed from this web page by selecting the appropriate link to the left.
To assist walkers in signing-up sponsors, the Chapter has arranged with Firstgiving to provide
individualized online pledging pages. Walkers can set up their own secure page by selecting the
Register Online link to the left. Walkers can e-mail the link to their page to potential sponsors they
know throughout the world.
Last year ’s North Shore Walk-A-Thon To Cure Scleroderma raised more than $46,000, which
helped make it possible for SFNE to give $150,000 to the Scleroderma Foundation in 2008,
specifically for its National Research Program to help find the cause of and the cure for
scleroderma.
