The "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma" Walk in Philadelphia this past October 12th was the most successful walk to date for the Delaware Valley Chapter!  Donated to the remembrance of Kelly Spreng who lost her battle to scleroderma last year, this event raised an astounding $97,662.36.  On a beautiful Philly day, the memory of Kelly Spreng and the cause to find a cure for scleroderma had a moment of sunshine!  We’d like to applaud all those who contributed in making this walk the achievement that it was.

The awards for the top three teams with the most walkers were:

2nd Place – Kelly’s Crusaders
3rd Place – Nancy’s Nation

The awards for the top three teams to raise the most money are:
1st Place – Kelly’s Crusaders
2nd Place – Team Cimini

A special note of appreciation goes out to those who volunteered their time and the local businesses that helped support and sponsor this walk including:  Actelion Pharmaceuticals, B101, IMS Audio Visual, Ocean Trophy, PREIT Services, Burt Hill, Bernie’s Pretzels, and MarketForce.  Given the accomplishment of the previous Philly Walk we look forward to maintaining the momentum as we embark on the 20th anniversary of this event this coming October!

It was August 23, 2008, a picture-perfect day in a picture-perfect park with a group of the most enthusiastic supporters of the scleroderma cause.   Every year the numbers have grown for this annual “Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma” Walk-a-thon.   This year 171 walkers turned out in John Rudy Park in York, PA and raised over $17,000!  This is the highest number of walkers that have taken part in this event.

The top three teams to win the award for most walkers for a team were:

  • Don Your Walking Shoes – first place
  • Deb’s Crusaders – second place
  • Team Valentin - third place

The award for most money raised by a team are:

  • Kay’s Crew – first place
  • Deb’s Crusaders – second place
  • Team Wendy - third place

The volunteers responsible for this successful event are to be commended.  Everyone worked together before, during and after the walk with an ease that made it possible to accomplish so much.  Many thanks to all the local businesses, Actelion Pharmaceuticals and HealthSouth in providing support with sponsorships and giveaway goodies for our walkers.  Bagels and hot dogs appeased the appetite before the participants set out in their walking shoes and after they returned.

Many, many thanks to the volunteers who make this walk possible every year.  The Scleroderma Foundation Delaware Valley Chapter is grateful for your passion and hard work.

The “Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma” Walk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was held on June 1, 2008. Families formed teams and supported the 8th annual walk in NJ to stroll along the boardwalk in Avon-by-the-Sea on a beautiful Sunday morning.

We sincerely appreciate the generosity of our sponsors: Actelion Pharmaceuticals, AckLink, Bar Anticipation, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Lacey Elks Charitable Committee, Ocean Trophy, RC Graphics and Teamsters Joint Council No. 73. “Buster,” the Lakewood Blue Claws’ mascot, delighted everyone young and old.

The walk went smoothly with the assistance of volunteers that started at 7 AM with set-up, registration, photos, 50/50, sale of promo items, ice, water, juice, t-shirts, and breakdown. We sincerely appreciate the talent of Wendy Faggart in designing the walk brochures for the chapter. Our thanks are extended to every volunteer for your time and talents.

Congratulations to the teams with the most walkers: Grandma Doris’ Kids, Mario’s Marchers and Team Rapolla!

Volunteers and walkers attended an all-you-can-eat BBQ hosted and donated by Bar Anticipation! Thanks to Bar Anticipation in providing a delicious lunch and a place to relax and unwind with family and friends after the walk.

Avon-by-the-Sea was a great venue from the perfect weather, boardwalk, plenty of parking, benches, pavilion, beautiful beach and especially the friendly people.

Thanks to all who attended and supported the Shore Walk in 2008!

"Rock and Comedy for a Cure"

Rock and Comedy for a Cure

The 2nd annual “Rock & Comedy for a Cure” was held on May 9, 2008 at the Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA. Millersville University students and the Scleroderma Foundation Delaware Valley Chapter united for a night was filled with entertainment.

Under the direction of Dr. Theresa A. Russell-Loretz, students were given an assignment to select a non-profit organization and plan an event to raise funds and awareness for the organization. Wendy Faggart was instrumental in orchestrating this event with students, Jessica Duval, Amy Kerlin, Eric Moody and Cody Wert. Each student had a specific role working on the project from the initial concept to organizing the fundraiser, advertising, promoting and selling tickets to ensuring success of this event.

Thanks to the Chameleon Club for hosting the 2nd annual event; Wendy Faggart; sponsors ReMax, Associates of Lancaster; Mike Tropp Team and Clipper Magazine along with stand-up comedians Tom Sanford & Carole who made everyone laugh in between performances by the bands: Nothing but Oregano, Slimfit, Reason Left Town, Stinging Neetles, River Town Revival and Michael Reilly.

The SFDV benefited by funds raised but even more from the public awareness of Scleroderma brought forth to the public by the students’ efforts. We thank Professor Russell-Loretz for her devoted effort to instilling values into her educational curriculum. “Rock & Comedy for a Cure” was a fun-filled night of entertainment. The SFDV grades the Millersville University project an “A+!”
