Northern Indiana Walk a Great Success

Nearly 200 people came together for Northern Indiana's 2nd annual walk, June 22, 2008 inNorthern Indian walk 2008 beautiful Shanklin Park in Goshen Indiana. Great temperatures and a short rain shower that waited until everyone was back at the pavilion made the walking easy and fun. Dunkin Donuts provided some breakfast goodies, coffee, juice and water to jump start the day. GraphieTees/Mito Craft had t-shirts for all signed-in walkers and donated canvas goodie bags filled with helpful products for the first 100 walkers. Kids had goodie bags too and bright, sunny yellow shirts of their own. Other teams were able to pick their own colors for a great visual effect.

Balloon arch at Northern Indiana walk 2008Balloon Express did a great job on the archway and balloon bouquets with the Scleroderma Foundation colors. With just a slight breeze, everything looked wonderful and caught the attention of all who were at the park.

Thanks to 'From Scratch' Pet Bakery -the four-legged set were not left out. Dogs who brought their owners to the walk were treated to free samples of a peanut butter cake with yogurt frosting in the shape of a bone and 'hunny mutt' treats to take home. Great addition to the fun!

Steve Vaught, Magician, entertained under the balloon arch before the walks Walkers at Northern Indiana walk 2008began, using some from the audience to help with the illusions. Great show!

The beautiful handmade queensize quilt donated for the raffle prize (with two sets of sheets and three throw pillows) was on display in the great room. There were sponsor, informational booths and a craft table for the children. Thank You's go to: Arbonne Products (donor), Goshen Health Systems (sponsor), NI-Disability Advocacy Network and WheelChairHelp.org for their willingness to help make the event a success.

Silent Auction items and door prizes garnered quite a bit of attention. Excellent gift cards for restaurants and shopping made some folks very happy!! Our winners for longest distance traveled (Miami, FL) most group funds raised(over $1100), largest group(22) and individual-most funds raised ($500), all recieved big dollar gift cards for their efforts.

Walkers at Northern Indiana walk 2008Two televsion stations came out to cover the event. Fox28 News and NBC's WNDU reporters came out to see what Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma was all about. Both evening newscasts had great shots of walk participants and gave some important information to the public about Scleroderma.

Following the one and three mile walks, everyone was treated to a barbeque luncheon with hot dogs and burgers from Dana J's Deli. Pop and lemonade accompanied chips and cookies to round out the meal. With plenty of picnic tables and a large porch there were plenty of places to sit, eat and relax.

So many thanks go to our volunteers: Peter, Laura, John & Lynn, Steve & Andrea, John & Charlotte, John & Sarah, Richard & Gail, Robert & Lisa, Brittany, Michael & Laura & Laura's Mom, John & Denise, Terry & Leandra, Don, Marj & Kelly - and everyone else who stepped in to help when we needed it most! You guys are truly the backbone of the group and we couldn't pull this off without you!

Many agreed that the location was fantastic and want to return again next year. It was a great day of fun and bringing our families and friends together to find a cure for Scleroderma. Photo Album

Highland Park walk

Sunday, June 22, 2008 was the date for our sixth annual “Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma” walk held in beautiful downtown Highland Park. The walk began and ended at the downtown Highland Park Metra Station parking lot. The rain fell but spirits were not dampened as nearly 600 people lined up and walked the course. The sun came out to end the event and the day was wonderful.

Chairwoman Carol Goldman and the fabulous walk committee worked so hard, organizing, promoting, and setting up the event. We wish to thank Carol Goldman, Peter Goldman, Mike and Gail Brenner (fabulous job on the T-shirts, DJ, tables, chairs, sponsors and all you do!), Leslie Cogan, Kathie Greenberg, Board President Greg Marion, Sarah Tornes, Toni Feingold, Jackie Andelman, and Jodi Marion (for the great job on soliciting raffle items!)

Activities included a moonwalk for the kids, a face painter and balloon designer, a wonderful raffle with 10 fabulous baskets and other great items, and fabulous food. Everyone had a chance to participate in a 1- or 3-mile walk, and then returned to enjoy donated fruit, water, energy bars, Starbucks coffee, and of course, Carol’s Cookies!

We wish to thank our many sponsors including Actelion – National Platinum Sponsor, Whole Foods, Phoebe and Frances, Larry Miller Photography, Sunset Foods, Susan Spriggs face painter, Starbucks Coffee, Carol’s Cookies, Anton’s Fruit Ranch, Signs Now, Mirco Builders, Penny’s From Heaven, Lenzini Excavating, Dunkin Donuts, Crossroads Car Wash, and Twist N’ Shout.

We are happy to report that over $5,000 was raised on the raffle alone and we are awaiting the final tally for the walk. That number will be posted here when we have it!

We also wish to thank our wonderful volunteers. We could not have put on this event with out you! Thank you so much for giving up your Sunday morning to be with us! We appreciate it, and you are the best!

Again, thanks to all who walked, volunteered, worked on the committee, and are dedicated to the Scleroderma Foundation!
