Help Support Funding for Biomedical Research

Contact Your Member of Congress TODAY!

On Wednesday, July 14th the House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee is scheduled to mark-up its FY11 spending bill. This is the annual bill that funds biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health.  Now is the time to contact your representative and encourage him/her to support a robust increase in funding for the NIH.   Please dial the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and they will direct you to your legislator (even if you do not know who your representative is).

Tips for communicating with congressional offices:

  • Identify yourself as a constituent and ask to speak with the legislator’s Health Care Legislative Assistant.
  • Tell the aide that you are a member of the Scleroderma Foundation and ask the legislator to support a funding level of $35 billion for the NIH in the FY11 Labor-HHS appropriations bill.
  • Briefly tell your  story about living with scleroderma and explain that hope for an improved quality of life for scleroderma patients lies in biomedical research at the NIH.
  • Give the aide your contact information and ask to be informed about the actions of the legislator on this key issue.
